EMPATHY

Brief

Design an object-mediated interaction that enables people to step into the perspective of others, fostering an understanding of their feelings and challenges. This interaction should question: how accessible the beauty industry is for those with disabilities?

Research

Using a co-design approach conducted remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic, I collaborated with experts and patients. Through several video calls with two occupational therapists and neuropsychiatrist Pamela Guccione from San Camillo Hospital in Turin, I focused on Charcot-Marie-Tooth syndrome (CMT). I then connected with Monica and Elisabeth, two women with CMT who are passionate about makeup. They shared their experiences of how makeup provides autonomy, but also the challenges they face in applying it.

Concept

To create empathy, the project simulates the makeup struggles faced by disabled individuals. Monica, a CMT patient, likened her experience to wearing oven gloves—where fingers, thumbs, and grip are restricted. The project involves abled participants using glove prototypes to apply makeup, with Monica and Elisabeth’s tutorial videos as voiceovers, giving a firsthand perspective of their daily difficulties.
